At first I read that as “Who wants to be a seventeenth-century heir!!”
And then I realized it would’ve been out of character for Avery to say.
It would still have been more interesting a prize.

Even in 2000, I doubt you could buy anything with $0.17. I know of a place or two that have gum ball machines which take a quarter, that’s the least you need to get something.
My college bookstore used to sell 2 packs of chicklets for 10 cents, and that was in 2003.
For about 10 cents you should be able to get a small glass pipe of the sort that are being used more often for things other than tobacco. They used to be the cheapest thing you could get in kiosks.
