(The fact that it helps support the arms of a free-standing stone cross, of the type so popular with early Irish missionaries, is I’m sure entirely coincidental!)

It’s the fact that they’re combined that’s meaningful. Together, they are a metaphor for futility: “Crossing the Ankh”.
