Sigh. As one who has genetic damage from radionuclides, the resulting health problems are not fun. I found out some years back during a univeristy study I did of birds under different wavelenghts of UV light that I could see the light generated, but I’ve often wondered if that was inherited, rather than a mutation from I-131 and Lord knows what else that came from Hanford.
It is said that most children under the age of six can see UV, but the age-related yellowing of the lens usually blocks it. When a cataracted lens is replaced with a UV-permitting artificial lens, the ability to see UV often returns.
We could also try lightning strikes, atomic proving grounds (back when did above-ground nuclear tests), near-death experiences, magic… Hmm, I’ll just post a link to TV Tropes. Funny enough, look at first 3. I just guessed them. Man, should be playing Family Feud!

It’s a joke, based on superhero comics that generally involve radiation. No need to be offended.
Oh, the sweet, sweet irony!
YEAH, Bellomy, NO need to get offended at a comic joke…

Awesome if true.

So Ms. Sorkowitz was just trying to punish Millie? Darn. And in this universe an interactive toxic waste dump would be very plausible.
